Bergen County is in the northeast corner of New Jersey. Settled by the Dutch, Bergen was created in 1683 as one of New Jersey’s four original Counties. Its early borders included what are now Passaic and Hudson counties. In 1675 Bergen was included in a judicial district with the counties of Essex, Monmouth, and Middlesex. In 1683 the Provincial Assembly recognized Bergen as a county. In 1710, Hackensack became the county seat. Today, our 239-square-mile parcel of land in the northeast corner of the state has an estimated population of 825,380, and has 70 municipalities, 56 boroughs, nine townships, three cities and two villages.
